Man killed in Tucker mine accident

DAVIS – A man was killed in a mine accident in Tucker County Thursday, officials said.

Daniel Lambka, 20, of Kitzmiller, Md., suffered crushing injuries at 9:10 p.m. Thursday at Mettiki Coal’s Mountain View Mine on U.S. Route 93.

Lambka was a general laborer with the company and had more than two years of mining experience, four months of which were acquired at the mine where the incident occurred, said Leslie Fitzwater Smithson, a public information specialist with the state Office of Miner’s Health, Safety and Training.

Inspectors from that office have been on-scene conducting their investigation since Thursday evening, she said.

A representative of Mettiki Coal said Friday that an investigation was ongoing..

Trooper First Class J.E. Kopec of the Parsons detachment of the West Virginia State Police, the investigating officer, was not available for comment at presstime.

The Tucker County EMS also responded to the scene Thursday.
