City man facing forgery charges

ELKINS – An Elkins man is being held in Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000 cash or surety bond after being arrested for multiple felony counts of forgery and uttering.

Kevin Shane Elswick, 21, was arraigned Wednesday on 10 counts of forgery and 10 counts of uttering, all felonies.

Cpl. B.D. Tice of the Elkins Police Department was given copies of transactions made with checks allegedly stolen from an Elkins man and his son, according to the criminal complaint.

One of the forged checks – which were allegedly stolen from a dresser in a bedroom – included a phone number written at the top, which Tice called, speaking to a man later identified as Elswick, police said.

Four of the checks were used at Kroger’s for a total of $304.81, and two at Mountaineer Mart for a total of $143.27, while one was passed at Southern States for $171.71, and another at Go Mart for $15.56, according to the criminal complaint.

Police said the checks totaled $635.35.

Video surveillance at the Kroger’s gas pumps show Elswick “purchasing items with the checks, multiple times,” the complaint states, adding “on several of the checks, Mr. Elswick had signed what appears to be his name.”
