George: Schools to open Monday

ELKINS – This winter’s extreme weather has caused students in Randolph County to miss multiple days of classroom instruction, forcing adjustments to the school calendar, including having class on Monday, which had been scheduled as a Faculty Senate day.

Randolph County Superintendent of Schools Terry George and Assistant Superintendent Pam Hewitt announced students will be in school Monday, albeit on a delay.

“On Monday, there will be a two-hour delay for Randolph County Schools,” George said.

“It was originally scheduled as an instructional support day, and Faculty Senate will meet for the first two hours.”

George said classes will be in session on both Monday and Feb. 21 to recapture lost instructional time.

“(Originally) Feb. 21 was scheduled for a three-hour early dismissal, but will now be a full day of instruction,” Hewitt said. “April 21 was also scheduled for an instructional support day, but students will report on a two-hour delay to allow for recapture of instructional time.”

On April 21, Faculty Senate will meet the first two hours. Teachers are required to meet in Faculty Senate every 45 days.

George said with these changes, all possible days in the calendar have now been changed for the remainder of the year. May 29 is the last day of school for pre-school students, and June 6 is the last day of school for students in grades kindergarten through 11.

Spring break is scheduled for April 14 to 18, and those days will not be used as make-up days. George said.

There will be no school for students on May 13, which is primary election day throughout West Virginia.

Graduation dates for the county include 7 p.m. May 22 at Harman High School and Tygarts Valley High School; 7 p.m. May 23 at Elkins High School; and 1 p.m. May 24 at Pickens High School.

The next Randolph County Board of Education meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Board of Education office. The board voted on Jan. 21 to move meetings from Monday evenings. The board will now meet at 6 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
