New business creating a buzz

MILL CREEK – The grand opening of a new business in Mill Creek is causing lots of buzz.

S&T Bees opened Saturday as the only business in the area that sells beekeeping supplies. Owners Tim and Stephanie Bender also offer a wide variety of homemade tarts, lotions, soaps, honey and lip balms.

“I have nine bee hives of my own,” Tim Bender said. “The store was so packed today during our grand opening. We have met lots of folks that also keep bees.”

Tim Bender said the store sells smokers, hive suites, gloves, medicines, hats, suits, hive tools and honey jars.

“We felt this type of shop is needed,” he said. “Small businesses support the local community, and members of the community keep small businesses going.

Keeping bees is an exciting activity,” he added. “They are an exciting organism. They work in unity with one another to keep everything going.”

Tim Bender said worker bees only live about three weeks in the summer.

“They literally work themselves to death in the summer,” he said. “All worker bees are female. The guard bees are all female as well. They give everything they have and work to protect the hive. If they are pushed to the limit and sting, they will die. But even after they sting, they will continue to hit the intruder working until their death to protect the hive.”

S&T Bees is located beside the State Road Barn in Mill Creek. They are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Additional information about S&T Bees is available by calling 304-338-2334.
