Police: Man fled custody after identity theft arrest
ELKINS – A Randolph County man – who was arrested on felony identity theft charges and then attempted to flee from authorities- waived his right to a time frame for a preliminary hearing in Randolph County Magistrate Court Tuesday.
Lindsay Martin Stalnaker, 30, of Valley Bend, was initially arrested on March 17 on one count of identity theft, one count of forgery, one count of uttering and one count of fraudulent use of an access device, all felonies, after an incident that involved Stalnaker allegedly installing satellite services for individuals using someone else’s billing information without permission.
The alleged victim acquired a bill totaling more than $1,100 for the Dish Network services, State Police officials reported in the criminal complaint.
According to state police officials, Stalnaker acquired additional charges after he attempted to flee from custody later the day of his arrest. The criminal complaint states that Stalnaker, while in custody for his previous charges, allegedly asked an officer for a glass of water. When the officer went to the water fountain to get him the drink, Stalnaker fled the State Police detachment in Elkins on foot, according to the complaint.
Trooper J.B. Tindal, the responding officer and the author of the criminal complaint, said he pursued Stalnaker on foot and was able to locate Stalnaker hiding behind a house. Tindal reported that Stalnaker lunged at him in an attempt to get by, but Tindal restrained him. Tindal wrote that Stalnaker continued to resist until he was handcuffed. Stalnaker was escorted back to the Elkins State Police detachment office “without further incident” Tindal reported.
Stalnaker’s preliminary hearing has been continued and an official date has not yet been set. Stalnaker’s initial bond was set at $40,000 cash or surety by Randolph County Magistrate George M. Riggleman, but after allegedly attempting to flee he now has an additional bond set at $50,000.
