Storyteller Ashburn will perform at Old Brick Wednesday

ELKINS – A local storyteller plans to inspire women and girls during a special performance Wednesday.

An evening concert of storytelling, hosted by the American Association of University Women, is slated for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Brick Playhouse. The event is free to the public.

Local resident Rebecca Ashburn, a professional storyteller, will be leading local women through the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty.”

“This is the full version of the tale, which is seldom told,” Ashburn said. “It will be less familiar to most people, with a few surprises along the way.”

Ashburn said she wants to encourage women, high school girls and middle school-aged girls and their mothers to attend.

“Come and remember that you have power,” Ashburn said. “There are four kinds of power the women in the tale use. We will discover how we can use these powers in our life.”

AAUW was established in 1881 and works as a nationwide community to break through barriers for women and girls. Nationwide it boasts more than 100,000 members to support advancing equality through advocacy, education and research.
