Dance group traveling to Big Apple

ELKINS – Dancers from a local studio are taking a trip to the Big Apple to show off their skills in the big city.

A group of about 20 dancers from Axis Training in Elkins, along with their family and friends, will be leaving for New York City today to be on the scene for Friday morning’s “Today Show,” airing on NBC.

Axis Training owner Kristen McGill said the group will attend the “Today Show” taping – hoping to be shown on camera outside the studio – before performing in Times Square afterward.

The group will be traveling along with dancers from Mitzi Layne Studio 4 Dance in Clarksburg – a dance group that McGill was involved in growing up.

“I grew up dancing at Mitzi Layne Studio 4 Dance in Clarksburg and we used to take trips to New York City, Disney and Aruba as well as other places,” McGill said. “We are going with them on this trip. We have had this planned and are working with a travel company called ‘American Destinations,’ who set up our performance times.”

McGill added she believes this will be a great experience for the dancers, because she traveled a lot when she was younger and some of the dancers at Axis may not have had the same opportunity.

“We are really excited. When I was growing up we traveled a lot and I am excited to give the group the chance to travel as well,” she said. “We have been practicing since classes started in September and have been working on the routine since November because we will also be performing this routine at our recital in June.”

The dance will feature all of the studio’s senior dancers and some of the junior dancers. It will consist of tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop and pointe styles of dance.

Axis Training offers dance, tumbling and Zumba classes, along with other activities. Those interested in more information on what the studio offers can stop in or call Kristen McGill at 304-642-4565 or 304-940-3768.
