Race for Hope scheduled for Saturday

ELKINS – A local non-profit organization’s annual marathon will kick off this weekend to raise money for its food pantry service.

The annual Race for Hope Half Marathon & 5K Walk/Run, benefiting Catholic Charities, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday on the Allegheny Highlands Bike Trail north of Elkins.

“This is our fourth race,” Catholic Charities Regional Director Cindy Hammer said. “The race continues to grow and we already have over 50 pre-registered for the race.”

The registration fee for the half marathon is $40 per person, and $20 per person for the 5K run/walk. Children under 12 years of age can participate for free. Registration will be held on race day from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Leading Creek Fire Department, located on Triplet Road in Kerens.

The half marathon will head north of the fire department and back while the 5K run/walk will head south of the fire department and back. The half marathon is mostly flat while the 5K has a gradual rise in elevation of 260 total feet at the turn-around point.

Refreshments will be provided following the race. Five water stops will be available for the half-marathon and one for participants of the 5K. Porta-Potties will be available at the starting area, with another in the Montrose trail parking area.

Award presentations for 5K runners and walkers will begin once all participants are back at the starting location. Half marathon awards will be given out as winning runners, in their respective age groups, cross the finish line.

Awards will be supplied to the top two females and males overall in both races. In the half marathon, awards will be given to the top three males and females in the following age categories: under 19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and over 70. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Elkins and Webster Springs Catholic Charities offices.
