TVRJ to hire 15

ELKINS – The West Virginia Regional Jail Association is offering “one stop” job fair, searching for 15 individuals to fill new positions being offered at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail. The job fair will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 26 at Elkins Workforce West Virginia, located at 1023 North Randolph Ave.

During the fair, applicants can go through the entire process of making an application – from taking the examination, the drug screening, the agility test, the medical screening and the interview – with the potential of leaving the fair with the day the applicant will start the job.

Joseph DeLong, executive director for the West Virginia Regional Jail Association, said the 15 new positions were created as a result of a study conducted two years ago.

“The Jail Authority conducted an analysis which found 20 to 25 percent of the officers in the jails were working overtime,” DeLong said. “The survey found officers were spending too much time in the facilities and that was putting a strain on them and their families.”

DeLong said the study found that by increasing staffing by adding more positions would save money and be a positive step for safety.

“The findings were taken to the Board of Directors, where the potential cost savings were explained,” he said. “The board approved the findings and the recommendation to add more staff statewide was taken to Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.

He approved a pilot program at the South Central Regional Jail, adding more positions. The numbers were so positive, more positions were added to the Southern Regional Jail and the Western Regional Jail.”

DeLong said the additional positions look to save approximately $3 to 4 million, a huge reduction to the taxpayers of West Virginia. He said statewide, the authority is hoping to add between 100 and 150 new officers.

“We feel this is creating more career stability for our employees and also offering them the opportunity for a better home life,” DeLong said. “They will be guaranteed every other weekend off and it will be good for the officers to know they can go home to their families at the end of their shifts, rather than face four, six or even eight more hours overtime.”

DeLong said this will save more money in liability insurance coverage as well.

“Having the officers work such long shifts will help eliminate work-related claims,” he said.
