160 Minutemen mark milestone

WESTON – More than 160 students in the class of 2014 experienced a milestone moment when they crossed the stage Friday at Lewis County High School to receive their degrees.

The event was the school’s 48th commencement ceremony.

The class president, valedictorian and salutatorian each addressed their classmates.

“Today, we’re here to celebrate long successes that have been happening slowly and gradually over the past four years,” valedictorian Morgan Jackson said. “Please remember that today itself is not the accomplishment, but merely the celebration of the many accomplishments we’ve had in the past four years at Lewis County High School.

“Looking out into the crowd of my classmates, I see the next generation of caring doctors and nurses, loving mothers and fathers, passionate teachers, the men and women who will fight to keep our country free and so much more. I see the future whenever I look at all of you.”

Salutatorian Emily Hathaway said the graduating seniors are a highly skilled class.

“Always be proud of who you are, what you are and where you came from,” Hathaway said. “Live your life with passion. Don’t settle with merely existing. Be extraordinary, because we all know that you can.”

Hathaway also described the transitional milestone between high school and the rest of each students’ lives.

“We are not just graduating from high school tonight,” she said. “We are beginning a new chapter of our lives. We are moving on and leaving the familiar behind. Once again, we must meet the challenges of the next phase of our lives.”

Class President Robert Jones reminded his classmates of their new-found responsibility and their achievements.

“From this point on, we will be free to make our own decisions,” Jones said. “As I stand before you, I think of the many accomplishments of the class of 2014.”

Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps presented the colors at the beginning of the ceremony. Graduating seniors Georgia Warder and Billy Titus sang for the class prior to the presentation of diplomas.
