Elkins woman enters guilty plea
ELKINS – An Elkins woman pleaded guilty to petit larceny, a misdemeanor, as part of a plea agreement Wednesday in Randolph County Magistrate Court.
Melloney Mae Parrack, 28, was arrested on May 12, along with Melanie Michelle Evans, 33, of Belington, after the two allegedly stole more than $1,400 worth of merchandise from the Elkins Wal-Mart. Parrack was originally charged with one felony count of grand larceny.
Parrack was sentenced Wednesday to six months in jail, suspended for one year of unsupervised probation plus a $50 fine and court costs. As a condition of the agreement, Parrack is also restricted from being on Wal-Mart property, including the parking lot area.
Parrack and Evans were arrested after Cpl. A.G. Vanscoy, of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of a female shoplifter.
According to the criminal complaint, prior to arrival, Vanscoy was notified that a second female was “involved along with an infant and was in possession of concealed items.”
Upon arrival, Vanscoy met store employees, who told him one of the females had left the store with merchandise, while the other still was inside the store and in possession of concealed merchandise.
The female inside, later identified as Evans, was pointed out by employees as the person concealing the items, the complaint states.
Vanscoy, along with Sgt. B.T. Pawelczyk, escorted Evans and a “shopping cart full of bagged items” to the main office of the store, where employees said the items had not been purchased by Evans. The total amount of merchandise in Evans’ possession was $481.83, according to the complaint.
The other female, later identified as Parrack, was found inside her car in the parking lot. The vehicle contained several items that were identified, by Parrack, as “being removed from the store by her.” The amount of merchandise in Parrack’s possession totaled $978.29, police said.
Both Parrack and Evans reportedly told officials they arrived at the store together.
