State’s Largest Yard Sale starts Friday
BUCKHANNON – Bargain hunters are preparing to descend on Upshur and Lewis counties this weekend as West Virginia’s Largest Yard Sale is set to offer great deals and visitors a glimpse of what the region has to offer.
“Our phones have been ringing off the hook with people from out-of-state and from the state seeking information,” Upshur County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Laura Meadows said.
Meadows said the annual event – offered Friday and Saturday – is a great way to showcase the area and for visitors to find great deals on items. She said there are two official maps for the yard sales, one for Lewis and one for Upshur, that are available on the CVB’s website at visitbuckhannon.org. The maps can be downloaded in PDF form.
“Between the two different maps we have 100 registered yard sales, but there is always more,” she said. “We can say that we will have over 200 yard sales in the area.”
Meadows said the event helps to highlight the local communities and brings in business for hotels and restaurants.
“We bring in people from out of state and from all over West Virginia,” she said. “Restaurants see a huge hit and the hotels will have visitors. Our website has seen an increase in traffic.”
Meadows said it is difficult for the CVB to track the number of visitors to the area, but there are ways to see the Largest Yard Sale’s impact on the region.
“When you see the traffic you will see how many people come in,” she said.
Meadows said that anyone coming to browse the yard sales should wear comfortable shoes and have a bottle of water handy.
“Our yard sales are spread all over neighborhoods,” she said. “You will do a lot of walking.”
