Upshur Relay For Life a success

BUCKHANNON – Twenty-two teams spent the night walking and celebrating Christmas in July during the annual Upshur County Relay For Life. The teams raised $62,358 to help the American Cancer Society.

“Things went really well,” Co-organizer Jewel Fisher said. “We finished out with $62,358 on Saturday, but we will have some more to come in. Teams can raise money until August 31. We still have some to go to reach our goal of $117,000.”

Fisher said all the teams enjoyed the Christmas in July theme. One of the highlights was a real Christmas tree that was decorated in purple and white lights and featured ornaments that were hung in honor of cancer victims, survivors and care givers.

“Our tree of hope, which we lit Friday night, was new this year,” she said. “We had it filled with ornaments.”

Relay handed out several awards to teams at the event. The Golden Pillar award was given to the Pink Ladies Team; and the Glenda Smith Spirit of Relay Award was given to Don Cleavenger with the Seeds of Hope team.

“The Seeds of Hope team also got an award for the most laps walked,” Fisher said. “They had someone on the track at all times.”

George and Jane Bennett with the Tallmansville Baptist Believers was given the Virginia Heart of Relay award.

“Everyone had a good time and is looking forward to next year,” she said. “A final meeting for this year’s campaign is in the planning stages.”

Fisher said planning for the 2015 Relay For Life will begin in September. For more information about Relay For Life visit for find the Upshur County Relay For Life page on Facebook.
