Car raffle to help hospital

ELKINS – The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital can be summed up in four words: Finding cures, saving children. On Sunday afternoon, Elkins Auto Group will draw the winning ticket for the St. Jude Car Raffle.

When you purchase a ticket for West Virginia’s St. Jude Car Raffle, you will be entered to win one of five cars from Elkins Fordland and Elkins Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram: a Ford Escape, Ford Focus, Dodge Journey, Jeep Cherokee or Chrysler 200.

The drawing will be held between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday at Elkins Fordland on Beverly Pike.

Officials hope local residents will take advantage of the opportunity to win a car while supporting the hospital’s goal. At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, no family ever receives a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tenn., is one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas and opened on Feb. 4, 1962.

St. Jude is supported primarily by donations raised by its national fundraising organization, ALSAC, which was established by Thomas expressly for the purpose of funding St. Jude. The hospital also receives assistance from federal grants (mainly through the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute), insurance and investments.

About 7,800 active patients are seen at St. Jude yearly, most of whom are treated on a continuing outpatient basis as part of ongoing research programs. The hospital also has 78 beds for patients requiring hospitalization during treatment. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world.

Patients at St. Jude are referred by a physician, and nearly all have a disease currently under study and are eligible for a research protocol. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.
