Elkins Council appoints interim treasurer

ELKINS – Elkins City Council voted in a special session Tuesday to appoint an interim city treasurer following the resignation last week of former treasurer Lisa Daniels-Smith.

Accounts payable clerk Tracy Fox was appointed to fill the position for 21 days while the city searches for a permanent replacement. Daniels-Smith resigned to become a full-time educator at Davis & Elkins College.

In addition to her duties as accounts payable clerk, Fox will handle daily deposits, grant disbursement check requests and scheduling of treasurer’s office personnel, as well as provide support for invoice approval by Mayor Van Broughton.

Fox will be paid $14.23 per hour while serving as interim treasurer. City Council went into executive session for about 20 minutes before voting on the interim treasurer appointment.

Council also voted to designate city employee Melissa Stalnaker as an authorized signatory on city bank accounts following Daniels-Smith’s resignation. The other two authorized signatories for the city are Broughton and City Clerk Sutton Stokes. Checks on the city’s accounts must be signed by two of the signatories.

Broughton and council members Marilynn Cuonzo and Bob Woolwine were not present at Tuesday’s meeting.

The next Elkins City Council meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.
