Man dies in Elkins shooting

ELKINS – The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left one man dead Monday morning in Elkins.

Shortly before 11 a.m., police responded to a call of a shooting in the Home Plus parking lot. The lot is adjacent to the Wees Annex Building in Elkins, which houses the Sheriff-Law Department, Health Department and Family Court.

The injured man was taken by Randolph County EMS to Davis Health Center and then transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for further treatment. The name of the individual was not released by presstime, pending family notification.

In an initial press release, Chief Deputy B.T. Sharp of the Sheriff’s office said a male subject fired one round and was seriously injured.

Sharp later told The Inter-Mountain the man had passed away.

“I can confirm that he is deceased as a result of a gunshot wound,” Sharp said.

Sharp said no one else was injured and the incident is believed to have been part of a domestic dispute.

“Investigations are revealing it to have been domestic-related,” Sharp said. “It appears he was standing in the parking lot but that it still under investigation. Surveillance is being reviewed and we are attempting to get more videos that may have captured the

incident.”

Sharp said it appeared the man may have been in the Wees Annex prior to the shooting.

Also assisting at the scene were the Elkins Police Department and Elkins Fire Department.

Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has any additional information is urged to contact the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office at 304-636-2111.
