Quilt set to highlight annual United Way Auction fundraiser
ELKINS – A total of 30 different blocks, each one unique, have been embroidered, appliqued or pieced, and then put together to form a work of art – the 2014 United Way Quilt.
Deemed “an anchor of the auction,” the quilt will likely cause quite a stir of activity at the Randolph County United Way Auction, slated for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at its new location – the Randolph County Community Arts Center.
The quilt, and many other items, will be for sale at the auction, with proceeds benefiting 27 local community organizations offering vital services to our area.
Although the quilt was revealed Thursday, much time and many hours went into its creation. In January, Sue Pifer and the staff at the Elkins Sewing Center put together project quilts containing the material to be used in the quilts. Folks get these kits, make their own designs and complete each block for the quilt. Those blocks, which can be embroidered, appliqued or pieced, are on display at the Elkins Sewing Center, where people voted for their favorites.
Quilt block winners include Jo Conway, first place applique; Darlene Phares, second place applique; Donna Trulik, third place applique; Nancy Goerlich, first place embroidery; Joanne Pastine, second place embroidery; Shirley Carr, third place embroidery; Goerlich, first place pieced; Sue Sheets, second place pieced; and Karla Mick, third place pieced.
