Rain can’t stop demolition derby

PHILIPPI – Rain may have dampened the shirts of people attending the Barbour County Fair on Wednesday evening, but it didn’t dampen their spirits.

A large turnout came to watch the annual demolition derby that kicked off at 7:30 p.m. Steady rains that moved through the area forced a temporary halt to the competition, but soon the mud was flying once more as the competition continued.

In attempts to stay dry, many folks went next door to the 4-H barn to observe the hog show. Members work hard all year to be able to show their hogs before selling them at the close of the fair on Saturday.

“It’s a good learning experience for the kids. It teaches them hard work and good ethics,” said Melissa Dickenson, a parent of three 4-H kids and also the secretary of the Barbour County Livestock Association.

Dickenson enjoys the Fair each year as a good time to see people that you haven’t seen in a long time.

“A lot of people take a lot of time to make this a good experience,” she said.

At the main stage, entertainment for the evening started with Joseph Sisters, followed by music from the Rhett Walker Band.

Today’s events will begin with Kid’s Day as third grade students in Barbour County take a break from school and enjoy the fair. The ATV races – kids’ division will take place at 7 p.m.
