United Way Auction in new venue

ELKINS – Excitement is building for a Randolph County favorite happening Saturday in a new venue.

The Randolph County United Way Kickoff Auction is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. in its new location – the Randolph County Community Arts Center.

The center will open its doors at 9 a.m. Saturday so folks can preview the items for sale. Campaign Chairperson Gary Clay said the auction will feature some great deals.

“Along with the always popular theme baskets, the Randolph County United Way Kickoff Auction will feature many paintings, exclusive seats for the Mountain State Forest Festival Grand Feature Parade, an antique spinning wheel and an antique Singer sewing machine,” Clay said. “And we have four Pirate baseball tickets for Sept. 14 against the Cubs and four West Virginia University football tickets for Oct. 4 against Kansas.”

Clay said the seats for the MSFF Grand Feature Parade are available at Beanders and Vintage Restaurant and Wine Bar. The Beanders seating features eight window seats, while Vintage has 16 seats in a private room for viewing the parade.

“One of the highlights of the auction is always the United Way Quilt,” Clay said, adding the quilt can still be viewed at Citizens Bank of West Virginia.

Clay said some of the art for sale during the auction includes Glen Barnes’ painting “Place of Skulls” and Charles Frace’s painting “Hideaway.” Other items include a 46-inch round oak table and a 13-inch handcrafted state seal of West Virginia.

“We are inviting everyone to come out and support the local agencies that benefit from the United Way,” JoBeth Agnor, executive director of the Randolph County United Way, said. “The auction features thousands of dollars of donated merchandise, and all funds generated will go to help supporting 27 local partnering agencies.”

Agnor said the available items will include West Virginia University gifts, gift baskets, baskets of home-canned goods, gift cards, a sewing machine, pictures, tools and several hand-made quilts and wall hangings. She said the auction usually generates about $20,000.

“Food will be available during the event, and we hope folks will come with their family and friends to enjoy the event,” Agnor said. “We hope people will consider purchasing or donating items for the auction.”

The headline sponsor for the Randolph County United Way Kickoff Auction is Roys R.V. Supercenter. Sponsors include Citizens Bank of West Virginia, Davis Trust Company, Colonial Motors, Huntington Bank, Davis Medical Center and Mountaineer Home Care Services.

Items may be purchased using cash, check, Visa or Mastercard.

Agnor said tickets for the United Way’s 21 Gun Salute will be available at the Kickoff Auction.

“The 21 Gun Salute will follow the Pick 3 West Virginia Lottery for November,” Agnor said. “Tickets sales will be limited to 1,000 and tickets are eligible for the possibility of more than one win. Guns for the raffle total more than $10,800.”

Proceeds from the Randolph County United Way Kickoff Auction benefit 27 local organizations, including the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Catholic Charities West Virginia, Energy Express (WVU Extension Office), Foster Grandparent Program, Girl Scouts Black Diamond Council, Helping Hand Clearinghouse, Elkins/Randolph County Library, Helvetia Library, Pioneer Library, Tygart Valley Library, Valley Head Library, Literacy Volunteers of West Virginia, Meals on Wheels, North Central Community Action (Homeless Shelter), Randolph County Cancer Support Group, Randolph County Children’s Advocacy Center, Randolph County Domestic Training & Referral, Randolph County Emergency Squad, Randolph County Family Resource Network, Randolph County Humane Society, Randolph County Senior Center, Randolph County Sheltered Workshop (Seneca Designs), Senior Companion Program, Women’s Aid In Crisis, Elkins-Randolph County YMCA and Youth Health Services.
