Buckhannon Rotary discusses Art 26201

BUCKHANNON — The Buckhannon Rotary Club were greeted by one of their own Tuesday, when they received a briefing from Bryson Van Nostrand. Van Nostrand updated the club on the activities of Art 26201.

Art 26201 is a nonprofit organization with six sitting board members with a mission to celebrate and promote creative and inspirational opportunities in Buckhannon. Van Nostrand said they have several large-scale projects they are focused.

One is the establishment of Trader’s Alley Art District. This project focuses on taking the alley-way and turning it into an artsy, pedestrian friendly connector between Main Street and Jawbone Park.

“My hope is to make it a more progressive, colorful, fun place in town,” Van Nostrand said.

The City has been working on making improvements to the area, but Van Nostrand anticipates it taking years to fully mature. The alley is also home to Traders Alley Art Studio, which is operating as both an art and music space.

Another initiative they are working on is Art in Public Places. The goal is to place 50 pieces of art around town. Some of the pieces already on display are sky tapestry and the monkey mural in Trader’s Alley, 3-D printed metal office equipment pieces at West Virginia Wesleyan College and City Hall, the rooster at CJ Maggie’s and Evening Star across from First Community Bank.  The organization has another artist in mind for their next installation.

Another project the group is looking into is the establishment of a community arts center. The schematics of this potential project are still being worked through.

The next regular meeting of the Buckhannon Rotary Club is Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
