Woodly the Elf sports unique costume for 80th Forest Festival

Representing the Mountain State Forest Festival as Woodly the Elf, Benjamin Gilmore unveils his costume in preparation for the upcoming week as he is set to bring color to the forest during the 80th celebration. (The Inter-Mountain photo by Brooke Binns)

ELKINS — Woodly the Elf’s classic tunic of golden brown flannel-tweed features classic poets sleeves of dark brown flannel printed with acorns. The neckline is decorated with ruched chocolate brown velour. The same velour is used for Woodly’s  loose fitting trousers.

The tunic is topped off with a chartreuse green velvet caplet/collar which is accented at the center front with a diamond shape of rust silk dupioni, and accented with two acorn embroideries.

The back of the caplet drops down to a slight point and is accented with leaves at the bottom.

A unique touch was added to this year’s costume in the form of  “Forest Creatures” who show up around the hem of the tunic as well as on Woodly’s hat.

The hat has a distinct curved tip to match Woodly’s boots and has a wide Chartreuse green velvet cuff decorated with an embroidered owl on a branch, as well as some leaves in beautiful fall colors.

Other animals showing up are a squirrel, a raccoon, a rabbit and a honey bee, as well as more owls.

Woodly’s classic boots feature more chartreuse velvet ruched to form a boot cuff.

Each boot is accented with two embroidered acorns on the side of the foot.

A huge thank you goes out to Lola Collier for her work in sewing up this years Woodly design.
