Fundraiser to benefit Maxwell

A benefit for Shane Maxwell, who is battling colon cancer, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion in Elkins.

ELKINS — As many people in Randolph County have seen, during someone’s time of need, it is often the will of a small, close-knit community to come together to not only show support but to also assist that person in any way possible.

On Sunday, a benefit fundraiser will be offered for Shane Maxwell, a Valley Bend resident, who is currently battling colon cancer.

As a collective, Elkins Auto staff members have come together in support of Maxwell, someone they not only consider to be their co-worker but also a friend.

In addition to being a father of four, Maxwell is an employee of Elkins Auto and an assistant coach for the Tygarts Valley Middle School football team.

Lynn Croston of Elkins Auto explained that Maxwell was diagnosed with colon cancer at the end of September 2016 and has since undergone surgery. Maxwell is now continuing his battle as he is currently receiving chemotherapy.

Speaking on behalf of the Elkins Auto family, Croston said, “We are grateful for the outpouring of community support.”

Croston noted approximately 175 business and community members from around the area have donated time to organizing the event in addition to donating items for the auction and monetary contributions to support the fundraiser.

Doors will open for the event at the Elkins American Legion at noon on Sunday afternoon with Bingo beginning at 2 p.m.

Bingo tickets can be purchased at a cost of $20 for 20 games of Bingo at Elkins Auto prior to the event or at the door Sunday.

In addition to Bingo, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and cakewalk will be held at the American Legion.

Concessions will be available throughout the afternoon with the option of a full meal or snacks.

A two-hotdog dinner with salad and beans will be available for $5, a pulled pork sandwich with sides for $5, and a chilli and cornbread meal for $4.

T-shirts with the saying “Team Big Dog” will also be available during the event on Sunday to help raise money to support Maxwell.

All proceeds from the event will go to assisting Shane Maxwell in his medical expenses during his fight against colon cancer.

For additional information about the event, individuals can call 304-636-2222 to speak with Croston.
