Leaders ink proclamations
BUCKHANNON — Buckhannon city leaders signed and presented a number of proclamations Thursday morning.
American Education Week, the American Cancer Society Great American Smoke-out, Veterans Day, Red Ribbon Week, Unity Day and Alpha Delta Kappa Day were among the proclamations.
Unity Day was Oct. 19. The initiative, headed by the Upshur County Family Resource Network, is focused on alleviating bullying. Residents were invited to wear orange to show their support.
Alpha Delta Kappa is an international organization for women educators that was founded in 1954. There are currently 33 active chapters throughout the state with 1,125 members. The city of Buckhannon acknowledged Thursday as Alpha Delta Kappa Day.
Red Ribbon Week will run Oct. 24-28, and this year’s theme is “YOLO: You Only Live Once, Be Drug Free.” The week will be host to a number of activities as well as teaching children methods to say no to drugs.
Monday’s theme is “YOLO — #You Only Live Once — Be Drug Free,” and participants are encouraged to wear red. Tuesday is “LOL — #Laugh Out Loud to Drugs,” and participants are encouraged to wear loud colors.
On Wednesday, participants are invited to wear their favorite team shirts, and the theme is “E123 — #Being on the Drug Free Team is Easy as 123.” Thursday is “SMH — #Shake My Head No to Drugs,” and crazy hair is encouraged. Friday, participants are asked to wear reggae and beach wear for the theme “NPM — # No Problem Man, I Don’t Do Drugs.”
The week has been acknowledged nationally since 1986.
Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. Members of American Legion Post 7 were presented with a proclamation acknowledging the celebration throughout the city.
Nov. 14-18 will be American Educators Week. Mayor David McCauley urges all citizens to reaffirm their commitment to improving and supporting education at all levels, and to act by visiting local schools.
The American Cancer Society Great American Smoke-out will be honored Nov. 17. Those who use tobacco products or other methods of using nicotine are encouraged to abstain for that day. Tim Higgins, Shakia Keith, Joyce Harris-Thacker, Dr. Joseph Reed and Lori Uldrich-Harvey were present to receive the proclamation.
