Skate Zone to provide venue for youth

The Inter-Mountain photo by Sara Harris Cheri and John Sturm will soon open Skate Zone in Belington. The new business will be located in the former Family Dollar.

BELINGTON — In the heart of Belington sits a building that has been in the Phillips family since the early 1980s. Craig Phillips built it to house Shop N Save and, later, it was home to Family Dollar. The past few years, the building has sat empty, but soon that will change.

Craig’s daughter, Cheri and her husband John Sturm have a vision, which will soon become reality. The first of October, the building will begin to see changes and become home to a new face in town, Skate Zone.

Working hand-in-hand with the police department, the goal of John and Cheri is to have a family friendly, as well as a safe facility for everyone to enjoy.

“This town needs something for kids,” Cheri said. “By keeping it in the family as well as helping the community, it just makes sense.”

Belington Police Department will have an open invitation to come and go during hours of operation to ensure a safe place for kids and adults alike to have fun. The Sturm’s plan is to be open by December, with hours of operation being 7-9 p.m. Friday through Saturday and 2-4 p.m. Sunday. They also will be booking birthday parties, youth group and church activities, as well as private parties. Fund raising opportunities will be available as well.

Skate Zone will have roller skates to rent or purchase, as well as a concession stand. Excitement is in the air, so keep your eyes open for a new way to keep your feet “on the roll” in Belington.
