20th annual auction supports ArtsBank

BEVERLY — Dozens of artistic works and other items went on the auction block Saturday night to help raise money for ArtsBank Inc. during its 20th annual auction.

The event, at the Beverly Fire Hall, started at 7 p.m. with a silent auction, basket raffle and light hors d’oeuvres. Following the early portion of the event, a large crowd of community members and art enthusiasts gathered for the grand auction.

Auctioneer Ron Phillips, with the help of several volunteers, displayed a bounty of items to the crowd that were created by local artists.

Bidding was often swift, with many items going for between $100 and $400.

“Funding for arts education is very important, especially since they have been cutting back,” said Elkins Auto owner Jim Jackson. “Events like this are kind of essential. We definitely don’t want to lose the arts in the schools.”

“It’s a pretty good turnout tonight,” Jackson added. “A lot of events are not being attend very well lately, but it’s a good turnout for this tonight.”

Auction totals for the event were not available as of presstime today.
