BEVERLY — From test scores and community projects to maintenance needs, principals from Beverly and Homestead elementary schools presented updates Tuesday to the Randolph County Board of Education.

As part of Local School Improvement Council presentations, board members heard from Paul Zickefoose, principal of Beverly Elementary School, and Suzanne Cain, principal of Homestead Elementary School, during the regular BOE meeting Tuesday night, which took place at the Beverly school.

Zickefoose outlined early literacy programs, standardized testing scores, community projects, staff goals and plans for improvement during his presentation, and he noted a number of improved testing results in various grade levels.

A Zumba fundraiser with an ’80s theme is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Beverly school gym, and he said proceeds will benefit a school reading program.

He also recognized five business partners that have worked with students, including Lavender Fields Assisted Living, Blossom Village, Bobbie’s convenience store/restaurant, Citizens Bank of West Virginia Inc. and Beverly Volunteer Fire Department, Co. 42.

He thanked the representatives Tuesday and said these business partnerships “have been an integral part of our projects at Beverly School.”

School Board President Donna Auvil also thanked them, and said, “Without you folks, our schools would have a much tougher time.”

During Homestead’s presentation, Cain provided information about the school’s action plans to improve standardized test scores and attendance, as well as initiatives to reduce behavior problems.

Cain also highlighted online staff training, as well as a variety of student clubs, such as drama, kindness and STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

She noted the school’s maintenance needs, including some out-of-order bathrooms that need to have fixtures repaired or replaced. She also thanked the Tygart Valley Homestead Association for its fundraising campaign to replace the historic school’s roof.

“They are working diligently to get a new roof as soon as possible,” she said, adding that a fundraiser is scheduled at 6 p.m. Saturday at Homestead school, featuring a bake sale and live auction.

Fifth-grade students from Homestead’s music program performed during Tuesday’s meeting, led by music teacher Barbara Green.

The Board of Education also heard a presentation by Angie Davis about the Allegheny Highlands Parents as Teachers program, which reaches out to area families through home visits and provides a variety of services and referrals.

The next regular Randolph County Board of Education meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. March 7 at Harman School.
