Barbour BOE discuses state funding cuts

PHILIPPI — Barbour County Board of Education members expressed their concerns Monday about the state government’s proposed budget cuts in education.

The members discussed a bill that would eliminate the Regional Educational Service Agencies and how that will impact schools financially. Superintendent Jeffery Woofter explained his concerns.

“One thing about the RESA bill, when you look at statewide, a lot of counties are nearly as efficient as we are. We have the biggest RESA in the state, we have 12 counties and it saves us thousands and thousands of dollars in contract fees,” Woofter said.

The proposal could result in significant financial burdens on boards of education throughout the state of West Virginia.

Also discussed by the board members Monday was the upcoming Volga-Century Elementary School trip to Belington Skate Rink. The board commented on a previous class trip that Barbour County students took to the local skate rink, resulting in two injuries and the hospitalization of one student, officials said.

The board was also informed attendance reports in Belington Elementary Middle School showed gains in enrollment in the past month.

The Barbour County School systems are seeing a growing rate of homeschooling, officials noted. In the past week, the county learned about six new homeschooled students.

The board is still in the process of hiring a new Philip Barbour High School head football coach. The board plans to have more information on the situation at the next Board of Education meeting on April 10, officials said
