Belington residents concerned with water

BELINGTON — Residents in Belington have expressed their concerns about the city’s water quality recently because of a missed nitrogen test in 2016.

The water department missed the date for the testing period, but then submitted the nitrogen test on Jan. 11. The test showed a .53ml nitrogen quality, while the department is allowed up to a 10ml maximum containment level.

The department was required by the state to send out letters to all residents that receive city water because of the missed test.

The department will also send out another nitrogen test to the state this year.

The Belington Water Works agency ensures its customers that the water nitrogen quality from the previous year and years before has been at exceptional quality, officials said.

Nitrogen tests are sent once a year, as are a number of other tests the department is required to send to the state.

In the past five years the nitrate levels in the water have ranged from .23ml to .53ml, well below the maximum containment level of 10ml, officials said.

The department received awards in 2012 and 2013 from the state for water filtration quality.

Don Harris, the chief operator in the Belington Water Department for the past 42 years, stated, “If any customer is concerned about the quality of their water, they are welcome to come to the Water Department and we will show them everything we have.”
