Line of storms is expected to move in Central West Virginia

ELKINS — While a severe line of storms is slated to hit the state this afternoon, much of the region is only expected to see sporadic thunderstorms.

After a statewide weather briefing Tuesday, Randolph County Office of Emergency Management Director Cindy Hart said residents in Randolph and the surrounding counties have a minimal chance of seeing flash flooding from the rain.

“It looks like it’s going to be more toward the Ohio River… We’ve got like a 2 to 5 percent chance of flash floods,” Hart said. “Maybe like an inch to 1 inch to 1.5 inches of rain over the nine or 10 hours.”

The storms are scheduled to come through the region between 1 and 9 p.m. today, with some of them being severe.

“We are looking at some pretty bad thunderstorms. They are still predicting the thunderstorms and they’re going to be very sporadic,” Hart said.

Wind gusts will accompany the storms but should remain under 30 mph.

“We always try to tell people that if they have items outside to secure them and watch for the pets outside and make sure they are not in the line of debris,” Hart added.

The strongest hit areas of the state are expected to be near Wood and Marshall counties as well as parts of the Northern Panhandle, Hart said.
