Belington looks at police hirings

BELINGTON — Belington City Council discussed the hiring of a K-9 unit officer for the Belington Police Department Thursday.

The police department is looking for someone to replace officer Dylan Johnson, who resigned from his position.

The department is seeking a certified officer who can pass the department’s K-9 certification test before hiring and K-9 training.

Council will place an advertisement in the local papers in Tucker, Barbour and Upshur counties. The advertisement will run for two weeks, then Council will have a special session to approve the hiring of the officer.

Also on Thursday:

• City Council also hired Dale Carter as a new part-time patrol officer for the Police Department. Carter is also employed at the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department.

Chief Josh Hymes also reported at the meeting that Dakota Linger is still in training at the State Police Academy and is succeeding on his tests.

• Citizen Donna Coleman expressed her concerns to Council about two dead pine trees that the city owns that are near her home and in danger of hitting her house and power lines.

Coleman said she would help with the expenses of the tree’s removals.

City Council decided to contact Asplundh and the power company to see if an arrangement can be made to take down the two hazardous trees.

“I suggest that we see if Asplundh can help us out if they are in the area. If not, we will go from there,” Mayor Matt Ryan stated.

The next regular session meeting of Belington City Council, will be May 4.
