MiMi’s Greenhouse has unique offerings

BEVERLY — As April showers turn to May flowers, local residents head to their front lawns to add splashes of color using all types and varieties of plants and greenery.

One local business, and its owner, leads the way, providing hearty and beautiful additions to even the most complex of landscaping schemes.

Pam Bates, owner of MiMi’s Greenhouse on Files Creek Road in Beverly, uses her proverbial green thumb to grow not only amazing hanging baskets and flowers, but also to grow and showcase various unique breeds of plants.

This year, Bates is specializing in her famed baskets — of various sizes — and also ferns, foliage, bedding plants, black-eyed Susans, geraniums and a new cross-breed petunia.

“This year, one of my favorites is the night sky petunia,” Bates said. “They are so magnificent. It took them a long time to be able to cross those petunia seeds. They are just amazing.”

“And, our geraniums are just beautiful this year,” Bates added. “We have the reds and burgundies. These baskets are just perfect for Mother’s Day.”

In addition, Bates also is showcasing sunpatiens, a breed that is equally hardy in full-sun situations.

And, aside from flowers and plants, MiMi’s will again be selling tomato plants, pepper plants — both hot and sweet –and other vegetables.

“I’ve been doing this for four years now,” Bates said. “I set out doing this as a hobby, and it’s something I really enjoy doing. I just love this.”

“We may be small, and off the beaten path, but there’s something to be said about local greenhouses where the plants are grown with love.”

MiMi’s Greenhouse is located less than a mile out Files Creek Road in Beverly, just past the Post Office. The greenhouse will open May 1, and hours of operation are Monday through Thursday10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday’s 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Night sky petunias are just one new breed of plant at MiMi’s Greenhouse this year.
