ELKINS — The Elkins High School class of 2017 gathered Friday to bid farewell to their alma mater and turn a page on life’s journey to adulthood.

The ceremony was filled with family and friends, along with school dignitaries, including Superintendent Pam Hewitt, and members of the Randolph County Board of Education.

The night’s speeches centered around the class’ accomplishments and what lies ahead, including college for many, and careers further down the road.

Although festive overall, emotions flowed, especially from family members, as the senior class walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Cheers erupted for many as Principal Russ Collett presented the fruits of the students’ labors.

Graduation was especially bittersweet for Collett, who will complete his work at Elkins High School at the end of June, and assume his new position as assistant principal at both Belington and Philippi middle schools in Barbour County.

Top 10 class members for the class of 2017 include: Sarah Akers, Kyatt Bailey, Ashlee Bennett, Ben Chenoweth, Keaton Cooper, Will Crumm, Cambrie Currence, Jacob Earle, David Gainer, Will Gongola, Zachary Hyre, Megan Morral, Devan Ricottilli, Kyle Riggleman, Bailey Topping, Riley Tribble, Brendan Wallace, Russell Ward, Teshia Williams, Jarrette Zopp and Christine Zurbuch.

Following graduation ceremonies, many EHS seniors partook in the annual Project Safe Graduation event at the First United Methodist Church gym in downtown Elkins. The event started at 9 p.m. and ended at about 6 a.m.

Activities were planned all evening for the seniors, with thousands of dollars in prizes given out. The theme for this year’s event was “Viva Las Vegas
