ELKINS — Mary’s Greenhouse and Terra Flora Landscaping offers a variety of flowers, vegetables, shrubbery and trees to brighten up any landscape, at an affordable cost with homegrown quality in mind.

The greenhouse has been supplying local community gardeners for the past 43 years.

Owner Larry Gouer opened the business on Oct. 1, 1974. Due to changes in the floral business, Mary’s Greenhouse flower shop closed last year, but the greenhouse portion of the business remains open. Mary’s is now focusing more on potted plants and annuals, rather than the cut flowers.

“For me, it has always been about the pride in growing something pretty and the quality care of the plants and selection,” Gouer explained.

Mary’s Greenhouse also specializes in seasonal flowers, including fall mums, Christmas poinsettias, winter pansies and hanging

baskets.

Currently, the business is stocked with a variety of hanging baskets.

Mary’s has more than 300 different types of flowers and vegetables in its seven greenhouses, from traditional to rare plants. The plants are sold in both individual pots and six packs for gardeners.

Mary’s Greenhouse prides itself on selling a vast variety of special and traditional herbs, too, including different varieties of thyme, sage, fennel, oregano, cilantro, rosemary, chives, stevia, lavender, tarragon, mint, rhubarb, parsley, swiss chard, bay leaves eucalyptus and catnip.

All of the herbs offer a different taste and smell, including lemon thyme, silver thyme, gold thyme and highland green thyme.

The greenhouse offers a variety of vegetables based, including 25 different types of peppers, along with 35 different types of tomatoes and other varieties of cabbage, squash, cucumbers and broccoli.

Gouer said the great thing that drives the gardening business in Elkins is the extended growing season based on the colder climate, allowing growers to plant around Memorial Day.

“Here, there’s gardeners, they plant two or three dozen tomatoes, two dozen cabbage and rows of potatoes. People are much more gardening experts and old-time farmers, and this is where we excel,” Gouer said.

The greenhouses also are stocked with different kinds of cacrti, including blooming and traditional. Succulents are another popular item, including traditional and non-traditional, like the living stone succulent.

Another popular plant at Mary’s Greenhouse is the aloe plant, which provides a natural remedy in healing burns and cuts.

The Greenhouse and Terra Flora Landscaping both provide their flowers and services to local business; including, Citizens Bank, Davis Trust Bank, Huntington Bank and Mountain Valley Bank.

Terra Flora offers landscaping, both residential and commercial, tailoring to the needs of the creation of landscapes to general upkeep..

Mary’s supplies Terra Flora Landscaping with the trees, shrubs, bushes, roses and more to personalize every landscape, along with bulk mulch.

Gouer and his landscape partner, Matt Davis at Terra Flora, can even work with provided landscape to create a virtual preview before installment, to help the buyers visualize the end product.

Mary’s Greenhouse and Terra Flora Landscaping is located at 300 Ward Ave. in Elkins.

Mary’s Greenhouse is currently open for their spring hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday’s from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday’s noon to 5 p.m
