ELKINS — This Saturday, Elkins will celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks show and live entertainment for all to enjoy.

Randolph County Commission President Mike Taylor said he is sure that area residents and town visitors will enjoy the celebration.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the citizens and residents of Elkins and Randolph County, but also the many visitors that will be in town — either passing through or visiting Randolph County with family and friends for the weekend,” Taylor said.

Setting up on the campus of Davis & Elkins College, local musician Jason Hall will provide live entertainment before the fireworks show. Hall is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the D&E amphitheater, and the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department will begin setting off fireworks at dark.

“It’s nice that we can provide the opportunity to showcase Randolph County with the traditional Fourth of July celebration,” Taylor said.

The show will go on in case of rain, said Wendy Hill, executive director of the Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to comfortably enjoy the show.

The Randolph County Commission, Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce, Davis & Elkins College and the city of Elkins have partnered in sponsoring this year’s celebration.

In addition to festivities at D&E on Saturday evening, a car show will take place at the Elkins Wal-Mart Supercenter throughout the day, and another is scheduled downtown from 3 until 9 p.m.

Tammy Dolly of The Delmonte Market said the downtown car show was organized as an effort to keep the Independence Day car show tradition alive in Elkins.

Anyone who wishes to take part in the downtown show can register for free at The Delmonte. The event will not be judged, but prizes will be given out throughout the day — including $100 every hour from 4 until 8 p.m. A grand prize giveaway also is set for the end of the night.

In addition to Saturday’s car show downtown, Dolly added that a dice run will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, with prizes given away on Saturday.

“There will be a lot of activities going on, and the fireworks kind of highlights the traditional Fourth of July celebration,” Taylor said.
