JOB — The Job Church of God outside of Harman is hosting its annual Vacation Bible School event this week for all children.

The nightly sessions began Monday evening and will conclude today. VBS runs from 6 p.m. until approximately 8 p.m. each evening.

Any child from or around the area is invited and encouraged to attend, officials said.

“We want any kids from the area to attend, as well as kids who may just be visiting the area,” said Michelle Rhodes, the VBS director, the pastor’s wife and a credentialed minister in her own right.

“It is very important for us to help kids learn about God early on, so we want not only our church kids to attend, but especially the ones who may have not yet had the opportunity to learn about Jesus. We hope that if the children don’t already attend a church, they may wish to join us for regular services preceding their experience at VBS,” she said.

Each night consists of learning a Bible verse, singing, listening to a short sermon, prayer, playing various games, making crafts, taking an offering, winning prizes and having snacks.

The theme of this year’s VBS is “Outta This World.”

Rhodes uses examples of planets, stars, galaxies and other space elements to create a lesson that relates to aspects of the Christian lifestyle she and other volunteers are introducing to the kids.

Tuesday’s lesson was about the moon and how it is made of rock but appears bright due to the reflection it receives from the sun.

“The moon is made of rock,” Rhodes said. “A lot of people think that it is made of fire because it glows so bright, but the light you see on the moon is actually the sun’s light reflecting off of the moon. We need to imagine God as the sun and ourselves as the moon. We need to reflect God to other people and give them light.”

Rhodes leads children in the classic song “This Little Light of Mine.”

The kids receive outer-space themed prizes such as Milkyway candy bars, Moon Pies, Starburst, rocket-shaped popsicles and more.

Tonight’s VBS will involve an outdoor picnic with games, food and prizes.

“We’re going to have a pool at the picnic full of floating fish that the kids will pick from to see what prize they get,” Rhodes said.

“It will be a lot of fun and the kids have already had so much fun just in the last two days. It is great to see them make friends and come together for a good reason. We also have some cool prizes to give out, including a telescope.”

The special picnic will be at 6 p.m. today at the Job COG where everyone is welcome.

The picnic will also feature “Victor,” the church’s Dalmatian mascot, officials said.

Job COG member Sony Mullenax volunteers to pick up local children nightly by utilizing the church’s 15-passenger van.

Mullenax and her husband. Dave. also volunteer to transport children and adults to church services Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings, Wednesday evenings and Tuesday evenings, as well as transport clients to the local Celebrate Recovery, a drug and addiction recovery

program.

Arrangements for transportation to VBS or routine services can be made through contacting Rev, Todd Rhodes at the Job COG by calling 304-227-4004.

“Todd and I want to thank everyone that helps make this such a success,” Rhodes said. “We have had a larger group of kids this year. Some people that are helping out are Sony Mullenax, Sherry Eye, Pat Lane, Jonnie Ann Lane-Skidmore and Bayli Helmick. Other church members have donated snacks.”

VBS services take place in the church basement due to the unavailability of the sanctuary.

The Job COG is currently in the process of renovating their entire building. The upstairs of the church has been redesigned with renovations beginning in March. It is projected to be finished by July 2. The church staff plans to renovate the rest of the church within the next year.

“We hope to see a lot of new faces through this renovation process,” Rhodes said.

“It is really exciting to see the changes that have been made in the building so far, so hopefully community members will want to check out the changes and our services.”
