Pet Parade slated for Friday in Elkins

ELKINS — A unique event for people of all ages and their four-legged friends will be taking place Friday in Elkins to benefit the Randolph County Humane Society.

RCHS board member and event organizer Jenna Lee said, “Uncle Sam’s Pet Parade provides an excellent opportunity for pet owners to join together with their furry friends for some good, community fun to kick off the Fourth of July weekend.”

Registration for the event is scheduled to take place starting at 5 p.m. Friday on the corner of Kerens Ave. and Third Street, with the parade kicking off on Third Street at 5:30 p.m.

Those who register are encouraged to make a minimum donation of $5 when signing up. All proceeds from donations will benefit the Randolph County Humane Society.

“The extraordinary community support RCHS receives from local residents is essential to shelter functions — including providing a good quality of life for its residents as they await adoption,” Lee said.

Judges, including Mayor Van Broughton, will award prizes for the best dressed, best behaved and best of show pets.

Lee also invites people to stop by the “selfie station” that will be located outside of Salvage Style, located at 117 Third Street. The booth will include props and other decorations that owners and their pets can use to stage fun, creative photo ops.

Elkins Main Street Executive Director Karen Carper said she looks forward to seeing downtown flooded with fun thanks to RCHS.

“Elkins Main Street is pleased to partner with the Randolph County Humane Society on this new event in downtown Elkins. We appreciate the important work RCHS does in the community and hope Uncle Sam’s Pet Parade is a great success for them,” Carper said. “It will be fun to see people with all their pets dressed up in red, white and blue for Independence Day. Thank you, RCHS, for helping us bring July 4 fun to downtown Elkins.”

“The RCHS board would like to extend thanks to Elkins Main Street for their efforts in organizing this great event, along with the volunteers that have committed their time to its success,” Lee said. “Also thanks in advance to everyone who comes out to join in the fun this weekend for the benefit of the resident dogs and cats awaiting their forever homes.”
