Belington acquires city map from 1907
BELINGTON — Belington City Council announced Thursday the acquisition of the most accurate known original map of the city, which will be adopted as the official city map.
The original map, drawn in January of 1907 by Ray Teter, was given to the city by a Belington citizen at an estates sale.
The map has now been duplicated into eight blue copies and one black-and-white copy, and stored on a zip drive for future reference.
Due to the map’s age, the original has suffered some physical rips, tears and blemishes, which have been restored by Clarksburg Blueprint.
Street Commissioner Johnny Williams said the map will be a great benefit to the city.
“All surveyors, contractors and professional people can have access to this map, where this will be the legal binding as far as building permits and things of that nature,” Williams stated.
Before the original map was acquired, the city relied on different unofficial maps from different surveyors.
