ELKINS — A Randolph County man is behind bars after allegedly fleeing from police on a dirt bike.

Zeb Andrew Young, 22, of Elkins, is charged with one felony count of fleeing in a vehicle with reckless indifference. He is incarcerated at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond, set by Randolph County Magistrate Rob Elbon.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Randolph County Magistrate Court, on July 18, Cpl. G.L. Brown, of the Elkins Police Department, was patrolling on Davis Avenue near 10th Street in Elkins when he observed a male on a “non street legal dirt bike” come from 10th Street toward Railroad Avenue.

The male did not see Brown and continued onto 11th Street traveling at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles before he “cut behind a pickup truck through the ditch” and continued onto Industrial Park Road, police said.

Brown activated his emergency lights and sirens but the driver sped up and continued toward the Wilson Hill intersection, according to the complaint. The driver did not stop or slow down and passed another vehicle while going through the intersection.

Once on Harrison Avenue, the bike “passed a group of 4 (sic) subjects with juveniles walking along the road,” the complaint states.

The driver continued onto North Randolph Avenue, passing several vehicles, prompting Brown to pull up beside the man and direct him to pull over. The male turned onto Gum Road and came to a stop. At that time, he was identified as Young, according to the complaint.

Brown noted in the report that there were “several traffic violations well before contact” and speeds reached an excess of 70 mph.

Young was transported to TVRJ and the dirt bike was retrieved by Colonial Court, police said.

If convicted, Young could be sentenced to not less than one year nor more than five years in the state penitentiary, fined not less than $1,000 nor more than $2,000, or both.
