Festival’s grill-off is Tuesday

BEVERLY — The Beverly Fireman’s Festival is set to kick off with events for people of all ages going on throughout the week, including one very tasty competition.

On Tuesday, the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department will offer its third annual grill-off starting at 5:30 p.m.

Each participating team will receive a basket of ingredients to be used in an appetizer and entree. The ingredients inside the basket will not be disclosed until the grill-off begins.

Chief Jeff Pritt said, “Every item in the basket must be used in some way.”

However, teams are permitted to bring any ingredients they choose to be included in the dishes they prepare.

“A basket of food will be provided and contestants need to bring a grill, all cooking utensils and supplies or other ingredients that they would like to add,” Pritt said.

Throughout the event contestants will face a series of three challenges in which one member of each team must participate.

Last year’s challenges included a hot dog eating contest, bobbing for apples, and carrying an interior attack fire hose that is 50 feet long and using the hose to spray water and knock an object off of a road cone.

Pritt said that the winning team from each challenge will receive an advantage in the competition.

“There will be three challenges and the winner of each challenge will have the opportunity to gain an advantage in the final tally,” he said.

Pritt invites the public to come out and enjoy the competition. Spectators can purchase food from the BVFD Women’s Auxiliary during the competition.

In addition to the competition, Tommy Oldaker will be providing live entertainment at the fire house on Tuesday evening.

Anyone who wishes to register may do so before 9 p.m. on Monday by calling the fire house at 304-636-5002. The event is open to teams of no more than three individuals. The grill off will be sponsored by the Vintage Restaurant and Wine Bar and Shop n Save.

Assistant chief Andy Burns said that each year, the BVFD tries to expand their festival for children.
