Church plans backpack giveaway

Event to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in Valley Head

VALLEY HEAD — A church ministry that began in Pocahontas County is set to reach people in Valley Head this weekend, as part of a free backpack giveaway to anyone in need.

The First Baptist Church of Huntersville and the Kids Closet children’s ministry have hosted giveaway events throughout Pocahontas County, and now they are reaching out to the Valley Head area, said the Rev. Phillip Thompson, pastor of the church.

“We’re able to do a lot in our community. … The Lord’s allowing us to go further with our ministry, and we’re venturing a little into Randolph County,” Thompson said in a phone interview this week.

Saturday’s giveaway will begin at 11 a.m. and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. It will last until 1 p.m., or until supplies run out. The new backpacks will be filled with a variety of goodies for children, Thompson said, and he hopes it will have a positive impact on families in need.

The giveaway event will be set up at the intersection of U.S. 219 and Rt. 15 at Valley Head.

He said his church has hosted similar giveaways prior to the new school year in Hillsboro, Green Bank, Marlinton and other areas, and the church might plan a giveaway in Valley Head again in the summer of 2018. He noted he would be open to working with other churches or charitable organizations in Randolph County in the future.

More information is available by calling the First Baptist Church of Huntersville at 304-799-4099. Thompson can be reached by email at pastorphil2@gmail.com.
