MILL CREEK — Students at Tygarts Valley High School are making donations to benefit a local cause this holiday season and encourage the community to also take part.

Tatum Wamsley, a 10th-grader at TVHS and vice president of Key Club, challenged fellow students at Tygarts Valley to donate to the annual U.S. Marine Corps League Toys for Tots program.

She explained the entire school is participating by donating toys for children of all ages, adding they have collected enough toys to fill a whole box and are working on filling a second before making their donation to Toys for Tots Friday.

“I’m extremely happy that anyone has donated because I didn’t expect us to get as far as we have,” Wamsley said. “I’m crossing my fingers for another boxful by Friday.”

Key Club advisor Betty Newsome said members of the community are encouraged to take part in the club’s initiative to help students help make Christmas special for youngsters in the area. Toys being donated can be dropped off anytime during the school day until Friday. For more information, individuals may call the school at 304-335-4575.

Elkins Marine Corps League regional chairman Roger Ware said in 2016 the program served 1,003 families, including a total of 2,014 children, and more than 14,000 toys were collected to be distributed.

While this is the first year Key Club at TVHS has led the initiative, Ware said the school, including both clubs and individuals completing senior projects, have made contributions to the project in years past, adding the students have been very helpful.

Additional information about making donations or registering for the program is available by calling 304-636-4365.
