Businesses signing up for Upshur Day
Event set next month at Capitol
BUCKHANNON — Local businesses and organizations will have an opportunity to show off the county’s small-town charm during the upcoming Upshur Day at the West Virginia Legislature.
From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Feb. 28, the West Virginia State Capitol will be somewhat of a “mini downtown” with multiple businesses and groups showcasing the development and growth of Upshur County.
Though the set date is too late into Legislative session to bring forth local issues, Laura Meadows, executive director of Upshur County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said this year the objective is to create some collaboration between local groups and show a positive representation of Upshur County.
Meadows said the goal is to have 15 to 20 businesses/organizations in Charleston to represent Buckhannon and Upshur County.
Currently, about 10 groups/business have confirmed attendance.
“We expect it to grow as organizations can finalize their plans and schedules,” she noted.
So far, St. Joseph’s Hospital, the West Virginia Strawberry Festival, Create Buckhannon/Festival Fridays, the City of Buckhannon, the Upshur County Commission, the Buckhannon-Upshur Convention & Visitors Bureau, West Virginia Wesleyan College and more have signed up to be part of Upshur Day.
“Anytime we can have groups come together, it’s a benefit to the community. It shows our local legislators that each group is strongly committed to their individual missions, but also working with others for the overall betterment of Buckhannon and Upshur County,” Meadows said.
During Jan. 18’s Buckhannon City Council meeting, council member Robbie Skinner advised council about the upcoming event.
“What this is (designed for) is to bring awareness to our (elected) officials across the state of what we have to offer here in Buckhannon and Upshur County,” he said.
Mayor David McCauley commented, “I can’t think of a possible reason why we would not want to participate.”
Interested exhibitors should bring two representatives from each organization, tablecloths, brochures, promotional items, candy, raffle drawings, a dolly or cart to transport displays/equipment and extension cords or power strips.
