Drug raid in Elkins leads to arrest
ELKINS — An arrest has been made following a drug raid by the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force Wednesday afternoon.
Christopher Daniel Smith, 34, of Brooklyn, New York, was apprehended during the raid on Wilson Street in Elkins, police said. He is being held as a fugitive from justice at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Smith is a fugitive from justice out of New York on a strangulation charge, Randolph County Sheriff Mark T. Brady said.
“He was a fugitive from justice on a parole violation on felony charges out of Brooklyn, New York,” Brady said. “He had served a prison sentence up there for strangulation and then absconded from his parole after getting out of prison.”
Brady added that members of the task force assisted the Elkins Police Department in taking Smith into custody Wednesday
“Our task force deputies and (Elkins Police Department) officers — we were assisting EPD officers on a civil process paperwork they were serving at 609 Wilson Street,” Brady said.
“The Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force arrested (Smith) and he was in possession of a handgun at the time also,” Brady said. “He was transported to the regional jail and the investigation is still ongoing.”
Brady added more details will be released in days to come.
