Stolen vehicle leads to charges

ELKINS — A Randolph County man who allegedly was speeding through Elkins Tuesday is facing charges after the vehicle came back as stolen.

Craig Anthony Currence, 37, of Mill Creek, is charged with one felony count of receiving or transferring stolen goods and one misdemeanor count of driving revoked, second offense. He is incarcerated at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $25,000 cash or surety bond, set by Randolph County Chief Magistrate George M. “Mike” Riggleman.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Randolph County Magistrate Court, at approximately 3:08 a.m. Tuesday, Elkins Police Department Patrolmen C.G. Boatwright and T.L.Hewitt were patrolling Wilson Street when they observed a silver Ford Fiesta traveling at a high rate of speed. Officers caught up to the vehicle at the intersection of Robert E. Lee and Harrison avenues. Hewitt ran the license plate number, which came back as stolen in the National Crime Information Center database.

The driver left the vehicle and went into Speedway, on Harrison Avenue. Boatwright followed him into the store and identified him as Currence. Currence said he was driving the vehicle and was placed in hand restraints, the complaint states.

Boatwright ran a criminal history check through Randolph County 911, which indicated Currence’s license had been revoked for DUI and he had a prior conviction for driving revoked for DUI on Jan. 8, according to the complaint.
