City plans ‘Spring Cleanup’ next week

ELKINS — The city of Elkins will begin its annual “Spring Cleanup” initiative next week, which will allow city residents to discard large items and furniture.

Elkins Assistant Operations Manager Melody Himes said the city will take furniture and appliances such as microwaves, televisions, VCRs and computers at no cost but will not take larger appliances including washers, dryers, refrigerators, ovens and hot water tanks. They also will not take tires, free-flowing liquids, batteries or yard waste.

“We will even take scrap pieces of wood,” Himes said. “Just things people may have in their garage or basement that they want to take out, but we will only take one level pickup load from each household.”

City officials ask that the items be placed by the curb away from the resident’s normal trash area by 5:30 a.m. on the first day of pickup for that ward. Himes added they will not revisit any location.

The schedule is April 16 and 17 for first ward; April 18 and 19 for second ward; April 20 and 23 for third ward; April 24 and 25 for fourth ward; and April 26 and 27 for fifth ward.

Himes added tire removal services can be requested at a fee of $5 per tire, as the city has to pay to dispose of them.

“We offer a special pick-up program that runs all year, so if folks have items they can’t haul away on their own to dispose of, we do offer a special pick-up service for that, that our street department handles,” Himes said. “There is a fee for the special pick-ups that varies depending on the number of items they have. They schedule that with me in the operations department and the streets department will pick up those items. Similar to spring cleanup, they have to have everything by the curb.”

Himes said they like to offer this program because the local landfill used to host free “dump days” once per month, but since its closure, residents no longer have an opportunity to discard items without a charge.

“This is just something we kind of offer in place of that. It’s not once a month; it’s only once a year, but it gives them the opportunity to get rid of stuff and they don’t have to haul it on their own,” she said. “Some folks don’t have the capability to do that anyway, and they don’t have to pay for the spring cleanup.”
