Wellness Complex plans move forward

BUCKHANNON — After discussing future development plans for the Wellness Complex property, the Upshur County Commission agreed to fund a model to be created on the land.

Shawn Tucker, of the Upshur County Youth Soccer Association, Inc, presented the commission with a conceptual drawing as a starting point to look at what can be done in the space, which is located off Brushy Fork Road.

“Our main thought would be kind of looking at it as having games … and still using out other facilities for practices and those types of things to help with some of the congestion issues,” he said.

Because the property is within a flood plain, Tucker explained the terrain needs to be evaluated before any potential development.

“So I wanted to come to the commission meeting and reach out to see if that was something that the commission could consider buying,” he said referring to the model.

Tucker said once the terrain model is completed, he could do the engineering work to see what could be done.

“Once we got the visible terrain model we could do the draining on that, and see what could be done in consideration of the flood plain issues,” he said, adding the model would cost $1,200 for the area.

Commission president Sam Nolte said no matter who utilizes the property, the draining issues must be addressed.

The commissioners voted unanimously to fund having a model completed on the property.

The next regular county commission meeting will be held at 9 a.m. April 19.

There will be a special commission meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Upshur County Administrative Annex. A second special commission meeting will be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively on April 20 in the county clerk area.
