West Virginia Strawberry Festival continues

The Inter-Mountain photos by Sarah Goodrich Kids enjoy carnival rides Tuesday evening in Buckhannon, as part of the West Virginia Strawberry Festival. Several carnival rides will be available throughout Sunday, as well as many other festival attractions.

BUCKHANNON — Upshur County residents and visitors strolled through downtown Buckhannon as local shops were filled with strawberry gifts and flavors, as the 77th West Virginia Strawberry Festival continued for its fourth day Tuesday.

The popular event in Buckhannon features carnival rides, fair food and a variety of activities and entertainment.

The Upshur County Historical Society hosted an open house Tuesday afternoon. Those curious about the historical background of the festival and Upshur County in general could stop by to review books, old photographs, magazines and brochures with information from previous years of the festival.

Laiken Boyd, an AmeriCorps member with the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area program, said the open house focused on the children of the festival.

Covering the walls were old photos of children who had participated in the event’s parades.

Debbie Weese tidies up the Strawberry Festival Gift Shop as a round of visitors stop by Tuesday. The gift shop offers an array of strawberry-themed gifts and clothing.

In the early years of the festival — 1936 to 1941, children played a huge role in the event, making the Children’s Parade one of the largest festival attractions.

Visitors and residents also had the opportunity to drop by the official Strawberry Festival Gift Shop, which is operated by volunteers Debbie and David Weese.

Debbie Weese said the shop has been “really busy” since the festival began Saturday.

“They hadn’t had this store for four years. They didn’t have anybody that would take it over, and just stay with it during the festival the whole time,” she said. “My husband and I are both retired, so we said, ‘We can do it.'”

Debbie Weese said quite a few out-of-town folks have stopped by the shop to pick up schedule information and to peruse the variety of gift items offered. She added the Strawberry Festival T-shirts have been a big hit among visitors and locals.

“We’ve had a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s fun talking to the people that come in from other places and haven’t been here before.”

The West Virginia Strawberry Festival continues through Sunday.
