DAVIS — For Janice Youngblood, the Tucker County Community Foundation volunteer coordinator and Run For It director, giving back to the community is something she was taught by her parents.

Youngblood donates her time at the Tucker Community Foundation, performing a variety of jobs and tasks for the organization.

“I find volunteering rewarding.” Youngblood commented. “I think it’s something I do because I was born and raised to believe that way, but the Tucker Community Foundation is probably the most rewarding volunteerism I have ever done.”

The Tucker Community Foundations biggest event of the year, the Run For It run and walk, would not be possible without Youngblood’s help in organizing pre-registration forms and meeting with local teams and officials.

Youngblood chooses to volunteer her time at the community foundation because of her past experiences with volunteer and service organizations.

Local Rotary clubs, chambers of commerce, The America Red Cross, service clubs, sororities, schools and churches are just a few of the organizations to which Youngblood has donated her time.

In retirement, Youngblood was looking for a specific organization to volunteer her time to, choosing the Tucker County Community Foundation because of its services to the community and the surrounding area.

Youngblood has participated in every Run For It event since its creation. When the community foundation needed volunteers to help with events on race day a few years ago, Youngblood stepped up and has been with the organization ever since.

“It is so rewarding,” she said.

Youngblood will be starting her sixth year volunteering with the foundation this year, along with volunteering at her grandchildren’s schools.

She said she personally gains a great deal from volunteering at organizations and helping people, including “feeling good about the people who were helped by volunteering.”

Youngblood also feels the growth in the foundation over the years to be an achievement, as more volunteers have joined her in giving back to their community.

Youngblood would like to encourage everyone in the surrounding area to volunteer at any organization of their choice.

“I would encourage people to give some of their free time to volunteer in their community.” Youngblood said. “Especially if they’re new to a community, it’s a great way to meet people, make friends and have a rewarding social life.”
