Upshur BOE set to present public forum

Superintendent hopefuls will answer questions

BUCKHANNON — As the Upshur County Board of Education progresses in the search to find a new superintendent, a community forum is scheduled to allow the community to meet the candidates.

Current Superintendent Roy Wager is slated to retire at the end of the school year, with his last day set to be June 30.

Now the board is on the hunt to fill the position.

To allow the community to play an active role in the search, the board plans to host a forum Thursday night where community members can ask questions to the superintendent finalists.

The community forum will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. Those who cannot attend the forum but have questions for the candidates can email the questions to Tammy Samples, board president, at tjsamplesboe@gmail.com.

Samples said the board has invited four finalists — all relatively local to Upshur County — to the forum and interview.

“We are not releasing names at this time, as we have not gotten confirmation that they will be attending the forum and the interviews,” she said. “Several counties have a superintendent search occurring at this time. I am sure there is some overlap in candidates.”

Samples said the board is looking for an instructional leader who can motivate and guide both professional teaching personnel and service personnel.

“He or she becomes the face and voice of the Upshur County School system and must be community-focused/-minded and willing to visit with community organizations and other stakeholders to champion education in Upshur County,” she continued. “The successful candidate will use creativity, collaboration and vision to benefit all stakeholders.”

The board expects to hire the new superintendent at the May 22 meeting, Samples said.
