Baby Bear Trail Tale set for today

DAVIS — Allegheny Highlands Parents as Teachers and other local organizations are preparing for the Baby Bear Trail Tale at the Blackwater Falls Nature Center today.

The event, modeled after the annual Allegheny Highlands PAT Roll & Read, follows the same structure, with the exception of hiking through woodland areas at the nature center rather than using strollers, bikes and scooters.

Children and their families will walk the trails to different stations, following along with the Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle book “Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?”

Each station will follow the pages of the book, showing what Baby Bear sees throughout his journey.

Multiple local organizations and groups have collaborated to create the event, and some will even be manning the stations throughout the trail.

Participating organizations and groups include Allegheny Highlands PAT, Blackwater Falls State Park, the Rubenstein Center, Parsons Lions Club, Davis-Thomas Girl Scouts, Right From the Start/Tucker Co Health Department, Five Rivers Public Library, Tucker County WVU Extension Office, Womens Aid In Crisis and Tucker County Family Resource Network.

Stations will feature a mixture of crafts and games, with each station offering a snack provided by St George Medical Clinic that will be added to create a trail mix at the end of the trail.

The event is offered for children 5 years of age and under, with their siblings, gardens and/or parents welcome to accompany them throughout the trail.

Each family that participates will receive a copy of the book, up to the first 50 families.

The trail will begin at the nature center and will take around an hour to complete. Both children and parents are encouraged to wear hiking shoes and walk the trail at their own pace.

The event will last from 10 a.m. until noon, with all families registered by 11 a.m.

Funding for the event is provided by a grant from the Allegheny Highlands PAT, which was used to promote 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten last year.

The Allegheny Highlands PAT covers prenatal to school age children in home visitation programs in Tucker, Randolph and Barbour counties.

The only eligibility requirements for the program are age, with everyone encouraged to join and enroll.

Anyone who is interested in enrolling in the Allegheny Highlands PAT program is encouraged to contact the main office at 304-478-3827.
